Cleveland's Quiet Climb, San Diego's Loud One

SEPTEMBER 20, 2026

A quick lap of the standings, offenses and pitching staffs.

Two teams jumped this week in our power ranking. San Diego went 6-1 to slide into fifth, and Cleveland won five of six to leap five spots into ninth. Milwaukee stays on top, but the movement is all underneath.

Power Rankings

Power ranking — record, run differential and recent form, blended into one order. Tap a team for its week.

The Brewers hold first at 97-58 despite a modest 4-2 week, with Joey Ortiz going 8-for-22. The bigger stories are behind them: San Diego surged to fifth on a 6-1 run led by Ty France's 12-for-26, and Cleveland's five-win week, powered by Travis Bazzana's four homers, hauled the Guardians up five spots to ninth even at a plus-1 run differential for the year.

Best offenses

Team OPS — on-base plus slugging. Higher is better.

The Cubs lead the team-OPS board at .771, a hair ahead of the Dodgers at .764. Chicago's bats are broad rather than top-heavy, which is how you finish first in a category without one runaway name.

Best rotation

Starting rotation ERA — starters only. Lower is better.
